The Sub-Angstrom STEM

One of the most important objectives of the scientific activities of IMM is to move ever farther forward the level of understanding of the physical and chemical properties of materials, through analytical techniques with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. Under the “Materials and processes beyond the Nanoscale” project founded by the “National Operative Program-Research and Competitiveness” of the Ministry of Research, IMM has acquired a state-of-the-art electron microscope with a spatial resolution below 0.7 Å, the capability to perform thousands of chemical analyses per second, and an energy resolution higher than 0.3 eV. The microscope was installed within a purpose-built room in the IMM laboratories on the premises of STMicroelectronics in Catania.
